The first compostional sketch, showing the 18 x 30 ins dimensions of the key block, increased from an initial 18 x 24″.

At this point I was balancing the rectangular portrait on the left with the rectangular ribbon of her hunger-strike medal on the right. I had decided to place the procession along the bottom edge of the composition rather than along the top. The two central elements, at a huge scale, were the force-feeding in close-up above and ‘Avarice’ with extended right arm, below.
